Summer is in full swing, and in many parts of the country, that means hot, dry weather that puts enormous stress on local water supplies. While water conservation is a worthwhile practice anywhere and at any time of the year, the need to conserve precious water resources is especially critical in communities affected by drought.
Traditional approaches to water conservation, like taking shorter showers, fixing household leaks, and installing water-efficient appliances, are a step in the right direction. But they are missing one important detail: feedback. If I do those things, I’m probably saving water; but how do I know? As the old adage goes, you can’t manage what you don’t measure.
Supporting water stewardship through conservation is something we’re passionate about here at Master Meter. In fact, it’s the driving force behind My Water Advisor (MWA), our online portal and smartphone app that gives consumers up-to-date information about their water consumption. No more guessing whether those 3-minute showers are making a difference. With the ability to view monthly, daily, or hourly consumption, users can easily see the impacts of their water conservation efforts.
To help consumers be more proactive, MWA provides an end-of-month forecast that predicts consumption at the end of the current billing cycle based on past consumption patterns as well as current usage. Customers can also specify a monthly water budget to help them avoid using more water than they intend to use. If consumption reaches the threshold they’ve set, they’ll be notified with a text or email alert.
Timely information results in timely action. With MWA, consumers have access to detailed information that helps them effectively monitor water consumption — and hopefully make it easier to manage their water footprint.
